Professors:

Ricardo P. Matano, College of Atmospheric and Ocean Sciences, Oregon State University.

Vincent Combes, College of Atmospheric and Ocean Sciences, Oregon State University.

PROGRAM

This course is offered to upper level undergraduate and graduate students. Students will gain exposure to fundamental concepts in ocean circulation theory and modeling. Theory classes will be complemented with laboratory classes in which the students will have hands on experience in the use of the ROMS (Regional Ocean Model System) model. Course topics will include: rotating and non-rotating waves, frictional effects in geophysical systems, quasi-geostrophic theory, wind-driven ocean circulation, thermocline theory, the meridional overturning circulation. No prior experience in ocean modeling is required but students should have experience in the use of Matlab.

Students will be selected depending on their research interests and experience.

Non-rotating fluids:

Gravity waves, equations and boundary conditions, trajectories, dispersion relation, group velocity, energy flux. Short and long waves

Rotating fluids:

·         Geostrophic balance, scale analysis, Taylor-Proudman theorem, thermal wind

·         Frictional effects, Reynolds stresses, Ekman layer, Ekman layer decay, lateral effects: coastal upwelling. Inertial oscillations

·         Shallow water theory, potential vorticity, vorticity and circulation, Kelvin theorem, Kelvin waves, the Rossby adjustment problem

·         Quasi-geostrophic theory: potential vorticity in quasi-geostrophic systems. Sverdrup balance, Solutions with friction: Stommel and Munk, perturbed solutions to the non-linear problem, Rossby waves, the initial value problem

·         Thermocline theories: convective processes, scale analysis, the ventilated thermocline, the Stommel-Arons-Faller models, Meridional Overturning Circulation, Stability of the MOC, multiple solutions.

Final evaluation

Triangle.gif (69 bytes)Application Deadline

All application materials must e-mailed by Friday 30 September, 2011 and, if sent via regular mail, received no later than that date.  Applications arriving after that date, or incomplete applications (i.e., missing some components) will not be considered. It is the responsibility of applicants to ensure that applications are complete, and that they are e-mailed or mailed and arrive before the listed dates.

Triangle.gif (69 bytes)Application Steps

1. Read eligibility requirements and decide if they apply to you.

2. Download electronic Application Form and application checklist.

3. Prepare all application materials described below:

(a) Completed Application Form. Please fill in ALL the information requested in the form.

(b) A short Statement of Interest (within space provided) explaining why you wish to participate in the Course, how you expect to benefit from participation, and how you expect to apply the knowledge gained during the Course.

(c) A recent Curriculum Vitae (2 pages maximum), including list of publications, or a description of any research activities in which you have been directly involved.  The CV should be in an ASCII text file named with your  lastname_cv and extension (e.g. gomes_cv.doc or gomes_cv.pdf).

4. Make sure you have provided all the requested material. Incomplete applications will not be considered!

5. Name the file containing your application form (pages 1 through 3) with your last name and file type (e.g. gomes.doc or gomes.pdf).

6. Submit your application:
We strongly encourage applicants to e-mail their application.

(a) Attach your application form and Curriculum Vitae to an e-mail and send it to dinoce@hidro.gov.ar

(b) If you are unable to e-mail your application send all requested materials via an express mail service.

Triangle.gif (69 bytes)Eligibility Requirements

·         Applicants must have academic and/or professional background in disciplines relevant to the Course's theme. Minimum academic qualifications include a 4-year university degree in a relevant discipline. However, advanced undergraduate students with outstanding academic records are also encouraged to apply.  Fields of study appropriate for Course applicants include, but are not limited to: marine physics and marine biology.

·         Applicants must be affiliated with a research, educational, or resource management institution, governmental or not, in an IAI Ratified Member Country. Check for the IAI Ratified Member Countries at http://www.iai.int/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=19&Itemid=65. Applicants may be temporarily in another institution (for example, as graduate students), but they must have a permanent affiliation with their home institution and be committed to return to it within a reasonable time.

·         Applicants must be actively involved in scientific research. Applicants involved in activities related to the Course's subject, particularly as part of ongoing or proposed IAI-sponsored projects, have a better opportunity of being selected.

·         Applicants must have sufficient command of English (the language in which all course activities will be conducted) not only to understand lectures and assigned reading material, but also to participate actively in discussions and group activities.

·         If selected, participants will be responsible for fulfilling all legal requirements to enter Argentina.

·         Selected participants must commit to full-time dedication to the Course activities during the two-week period between 5 - 16 December 2011.
